WOI Supports Gan Ilan Play Yard - Ellen Bernstein-Ellis, WOI Co-president
Just a few weeks after the start of our preschool year, Woman of Isaiah hosted a Gan Ilan café for parents, with hopes of offering more opportunities to interact with our families with young children. We are a multigenerational group and are looking to explore which activities and services most interest our younger members. It also gave us “moms of older children” the opportunity to ogle over the adorable babies and toddlers attending Gan Ilan.
who was selected for the biennial Woman of Valor Award presented at the Women of Isaiah Kick-off Dinner.
A Lifeline donation was made in her honor to the Y.E.S. fund of the Women of Reform Judaism.
We asked her to share some of her memories and insights about her WOI involvement:
What do you remember about your first Kick-off dinner?
I was feeling different because I wasn’t Jewish and I didn’t want to stand out. But at the first event, I came wearing a turquoise blouse and skirt and when I arrived all I saw was a sea of black and beige outfits. By the end of the evening I felt welcomed even though I was in a different color scheme.

Rosh Chodesh Kislev: Art as Meditation
Monday, December 1, 2008 7:30 pm
Join Rosh Chodesh and Isaiah artist Judy Feins on December 1st at 7:30 for a relaxing collage project. You do not need any art training, just the desire to have fun while you relax and schmooze with your Rosh Chodesh sisters. We’ll provide most of the materials and ask that you bring scissors and (if you want) some favorite photos, decorative cards, papers or ribbons. You’ll go home with a personalized decoupage wooden box. In order to make sure we have enough materials for everyone, please RSVP by November 24th to or call 925-759-3221.
This program and all the Rosh Chodesh programs are funded by WOI.
An unusual twist on the traditional apples and honey to sweeten the New Year...
(Note: Prepare sushi rice about 1 hour before you will need it, as it needs time to cool down completely before you roll it into your sushi.)
Ingredients:
2/3 cup uncooked short-grain white rice
3 tablespoons rice vinegar
3 tablespoons white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
4 sheets nori seaweed sheets
1 medium apple, cored, peeled & cut into small strips
4 tablespoons honey
In a medium saucepan, bring 1 1/3 cups water to a boil. Add rice, and stir. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Blend the mixture into the rice.
Center one sheet nori on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands. Using your hands, spread a thin layer of rice on the sheet of nori, and press into a thin layer. Arrange 1/4 of the apple in a line down the center of the rice. Drizzle with honey. Lift the end of the mat, and gently roll it over the ingredients, pressing gently. Roll it forward to make a complete roll. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
Cut each roll into 4 to 6 slices using a wet, sharp knife. Drizzle more honey over each slice. L'Shanah Tovah!!
