“When we chant, we kindle a light in the words of prayer and use that light as a lantern to help us journey through our inner landscape.” - Rabbi Shefa Gold“Take a word or a sacred phrase. Put it to music. Repeat it over and over and over until you have been swept up in the rhythm, the sound, and the flow – leaving your daily thoughts behind – allowing yourself to be in touch with your inner spark. Chanting is praying with more than words. Chanting is praying with body and soul, bypassing the mind. Instead of thinking, allow yourself to feel; allow your heart to speak.” - Eva Friedner, Kol Zimra
“YOU sing a song, a chant SINGS YOU.” - David Blumenstein, Kol Zimra

Jeanette Gross, graduate of Rabbi Shefa Gold’s Kol Zimra Chant Leaders Training, leads Temple Isaiah’s Sacred Chant: Healing Circles in the Beit Knesset from 7:30 to 9:15 on scheduled evenings [see below]
Since July of 1998, we have met each month to share in ritual, chant and meditative silence…. finding some moments of calm as we immerse ourselves in the prayers of our ancestors.
Chanting meets on at least one Monday evening each month from 7:30 to 9:15, usually in the Beit Knesset. Be sure to check the schedule here for the most current information*.
No prior knowledge of Hebrew or singing is required - just an open heart and the willingness to learn and grow together.
Let the opening niggun (melody without words) draw you into the circle. Newcomers are always welcome.
We have recently begun focusing on the healing nature of these evenings of sacred chant. In our tradition, “healing” is not necessarily equated with “cure”; we have found this practice to be effective in promoting a healing of heart & spirit, sometimes even a healing of body.
