Contra Costa Interfaith Housing
Contra Costa Interfaith Housing, Inc. (CCIH) is a service-oriented coaliation of 15 faith communities in Central Costra County, of which Temple Isaiah is a member. The program’s goal is to provide permanent supported housing for homeless families, along with life skill courses, job training, counseling and other services. The rehabilitation and construction process has begun on a purchased property in Pleasant Hill. CCIH plans to start serving clients in 2004. For more information, contact Rabbi Graetz.
Loaves and Fishes
Since its inception at a church in Pittsburg 20 years ago, Loaves & Fishes has provided 2.2 million meals and now serves an average of 750 meals a day at seven dining rooms (Bay Point, Oakley, Martinez, Concord, San Pablo, and Antioch). Temple Isaiah has been a part of this program since the beginning by providing volunteers and monetary support through the Daniel Baron Feed the Hungry Fund. Volunteers prepare and serve hot meals on the third Thursday of every month at the catering kitchen in Oakley. Contact Phyllis Ceaser (contact information is available from the Temple Office).
Shelter Lunches
The One Hour Mitzvah That Feeds 80 People
Temple Isaiah’s Women of Isaiah sponsor a project that reaches out to the hungry in our own community. On one Sunday morning a month, we invite congregants to work in the Temple’s kitchen, preparing lunches for the adult transitional shelter in Concord. We are currently the only agency providing lunch and our efforts are greatly appreciated. Volunteers are needed to prepare lunch, shop for food, and deliver the lunches to the shelter. Sign ups are very helpful. Contact Denise Glicklin (contact information is available from the Temple office).
Shelter Dinners
Members of the religious communities of Contra Costa County have volunteered to feed families who reside in the emergency family shelters Mountain View House in Martinez. As a part of this effort to provide meals for the homeless families, Temple Isaiah cooked dinners for 5 nights (Monday-Friday) for a few weeks each year
For each night during these windows, we need at least 6 people to prepare dinner for approximately 60 people, 3 people to transport the food from the Temple to the shelters, and 2 people to warm and serve the food. To help with this effort, please contact contact Kim Miller-Hershon (contact informatio is available from the Temple office).
Shelter Snacks For Kids
Can you provide shelter kids with a healthy snack? Volunteers are needed to provide a snack like fresh fruit or cheese or vegetables for approximately 15 children that reside at the Concord Family Shelter. Contact Marla Simon (contact information is available from the Temple office).
Turkey Drive
We collect turkeys to hand out to the homeless during the Thanksgiving season.
