Social Action: Health and Healing Programs

Blood Donation Continues to be Critical

Give the “Gift of Life” by donating a pint of blood! Our local blood banks continue to have a severe shortage of blood. In 2004, more than 4 million Americans would die without lifesaving blood transfusions and one out of every three people will need blood. You never know when you or someone you love might be the one.

Next Temple Isaiah Blood Drive: To be announced

Temple Isaiah has coordinated with the Blood Centers of the Pacific to have blood drives at the Temple at least twice a year. At the last blood drive on February 8, 2004, Temple Isaiah blood donors gave a record 50 pints! The next scheduled blood drive is Mitzvah Day 10 - Sunday, October 3, 2004. Take this opportunity to help alleviate a critical shortage of blood while performing a mitzvah! To sign up for an appointment, contact Craig Bloom (contact information available from the Temple office)

Bingo For the Elderly

Temple Isaiah sponsors a monthly bingo games at the Ruetlinger Community for Jewish Living in Danville on the third Thursday of each month from 6:30 - 8pm. The senior residents of the home really enjoy these games, but they need a caller and in some cases, your ears and eyes to locate the mumbers on their cards. This is a pleasant and simple way to support our elderly Jewish communmity. Contact Terry Matzkin (contact information is available from the Temple office).

Medical Equipment Collection

Volunteers are needed to publicize program, make calls and find new resources for the collection of used equipment (e.g., crutches, prostheses, wheelchairs) for redistribution to needy people overseas. Contact Barbara Beckert (contact information is available from the Temple office).

Shabbat Socials at Byron Park

The assisted living community at Byron Park Retirement Residence appreciates our commitment to celebrate Shabbat with them on the third Friday of every month. We begin at 4:00 p.m. and finish at 4:40 p.m. Jewish tunes play softly on the radio as the residents gather. At 4 p.m. Isaiah members pass out prayer and song sheets and begin with the lighting of the Shabbat candles. Next, we say the blessing over the wine and challah. After sipping and schmoozing, we sing familiar songs together. Finally, we end the visit with sharing.Residents are encouraged to bring in personal Judaica such as quilts and candlestick holders to display as we discuss various topics such as our favorite Jewish customs, foods and holidays.

We welcome new ideas to help brighten our Shabbat. We also encourage musicians to volunteer to lead songs or provide accompaniments. Contact Sherri Miller or Denise Glicklin (contact information is available from the Temple office)
