The title for September is Malamud’s The Assistant.
A true American classic, Bernard Malamud’s THE ASSISTANT is acknowledged as one of the award-winning author’s greatest works. In a novel distinguished by unparalleled emotional power and authenticity, Malamud draws a penniless Italian-American drifter with a troubled conscience and a violent personal history into the world of a Jewish grocer struggling to eke out a living in a crumbling Brooklyn neighborhood. In the despair--and ultimately in the love--of the grocer’s beautiful but unfulfilled daughter, Frank Alpine finds the motivation to confront his past and seek his own redemption, even if it costs him everything he has gained.
The title for October is Centaur in the Garden, which will be available to borrow on Sept 4th.
Brazilian Jewish writer Moacyr Scliar brings us the story of the Centaur in the Garden. An outsider among outsiders, a Jewish centaur narrates his life from birth on a farm in Southern Brazil homesteaded by his Russian immigrant family, through his efforts to rid himself of his equine portion in order to take his place in contemporary society. Listed as one of the National Yiddish Book Center’s “One hundred greatest works of modern Jewish literature”, this earthy tale is one you won’t forget. Guaranteed to provoke a lively discussion in our group!
