9th Grade

9th Grade
First Hour Core Class: Etgar “Challenge”: Challenging Who We Are
Ninth graders embark on a journey of self discovery.  You’ll spend a soul searching year trying to answer the essential question, “Ani anochi?” or “Who am I?” On the path to unraveling your Jewish identity we’ll tackle stereotypes, the role of God, different definitions of Judaism, and Jewish perspectives on gender, sexuality, dating, drugs and alcohol.  Along the way you’ll get an amazing opportunity to learn about yourself and engage with your classmates.

Second Hour Elective: You Choose
You’ll be able to choose from our full list of electives, which will be available on the first night of Teen School.  Previous electives have included: Jewish Cooking, Photography, Art, This Week in God, Jewish Meditation, Jewish Views on American Politics, and more.

9th Grade Program: Etgar
Join 9th graders from around the East Bay for three camp-style retreats.  These weekends build upon the 9th grade Jewish identity curriculum. Etgar weekends take place November 16-18, January 25-27 and May 2-4.  Etgar weekends are not a required part of Temple Isaiah Teen School, however you are strongly encouraged to sign up.  To sign up for Etgar retreats see the enclosed Parent Supplement for registration fees and information.

LAFTY (9th-12th Grades)
Led by teens, for teens LAFTY is Temple Isaiah’s high school youth group.  With guidance from Alli Darrow, our Youth Advisor, each event is planned and led by the seven elected members of the LAFTY Board.  LAFTY events range from beachside camping trips to social action events, and everything in between.  Highlights include Tahoe ski trip, Scavenger hunts in San Francisco, Halloween for Hunger, educational Shul-Ins, and LAFTY’s biggest fundraiser, the Purim Carnival.
