First Hour Core Class: Gesherim “Bridges”: Ethics in Action
Do you ever wonder about Jewish perspectives on piercing, gossip, cheating, animal testing, and capital punishment? In 8th grade we take on all the big issues from a Jewish perspective, an American perspective, and most importantly, from your perspective. We’ll have plenty of time to discuss issues that are important to you. We’ll do creative & interesting activities that will help you discover where you stand.
Second Hour Elective: You Choose
You’ll be able to choose from our full list of electives, which will be available on the first night of Teen School. Previous electives have included: Jewish Cooking, Photography, Art, This Week in God, Jewish Meditation, Jewish Views on American Politics, and more.
8th Grade Program: Gesharim
Temple Isaiah’s 8th grade program includes one weekend Gesharim retreat and a day-trip to Angel Island. These events include all the 8th graders from the Jewish high school programs around the East Bay. The cost of these trips is included in your 8th grade Teen School tuition.
The Gesharim retreat takes place May 2-4 at Camp Newman in Santa Rosa. The Angel Island trip is a new addition to our 8th grade community program, and will take place on Sunday, October 21. More information about these trips will be mailed to you.
If you discover that you cannot attend the Gesharim retreat on May 2-4 you can sign up for one of the Rites of Passage Jewish backpacking trips instead. The Rites of Passage weekends to choose from are: October 12-14 or October 26-28. On the teen school registration form there is a place for you to select either the Gesharim retreat or one of the Rites of Passage backpacking trips. You must RSVP to the CJLL by October 1 if you want to attend Rites of Passage.
