Anshei is proud to present Pizza, Politics and Humor on Monday, May 12th, 6:30 pm in the Social Hall. Kevin Fagan, award winning writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and a Temple Isaiah Member will moderate a panel of Bay Area journalists and political experts, to discuss what may affect the outcome of the November elections.
Kevin Fagan, award-winning writer for the San Francisco Chronicle and Temple member will moderate a panel of journalists and political experts. Not a partisan debate, the panel will discuss factors that will likely influence voters and affect the outcome of the November elections. Panelists include:
KEVIN FAGAN. San Francisco Chronicle reporter and editor specializing in enterprise news-feature writing and breaking news, covering some of the biggest stories of our time including 9/11, the Columbine massacre and the 2007 Bay Area oil spill. He is known for stories unknown to most, such as profiling homeless drug addicts, serial killers, haunted houses and infighting on Indian reservations; and dispatches from Laos and Thailand on land mine danger, AIDS and drug abuse. Fagan has won over 70 national and regional awards.
MATTHEW STANNARD. San Francisco Chronicle reporter specializing in military affairs and terrorism, particularly from the Middle East; and domestically on 9/11. He has won numerous journalism awards including a Peninsula Press Club citation for a series on Israel’s withdrawal from the Palestinian territories.
BRENDA PAYTON. Oakland Tribune columnist for 28 years, now an author and radio commentator. Ms. Payton covered local and national political and social issues including the U.S. War on Terror, Hurricane Katrina, links between African American health and racial discrimination, underage prostitution, and the internment of Japanese Americans. Ms. Payton has won numerous journalism awards including being named one of the Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area by CityFlight Newsmagazine. She is working on a book, and doing radio commentary on KQED-FM.
JOHN RUSSO. Oakland’s first elected City Attorney. Previously on the Oakland City Council where he promoted fiscal accountability, government reform, community policing, balanced budgeting; and the open government law called the “Sunshine” ordinance. John was President of the League of California Cities, leading initiatives to protect local tax revenue from state fiscal mismanagement, and earned a seat on the Board of the National League of Cities. He received the Beacon Award for promoting public access to government and transparency; the Champion of Local Democracy award for strengthening local democracy; and was voted a Northern California Super Lawyer by Law & Politics.
