Today we have three shelters in Berkeley, Oakland, and Hayward, an employment component, several transitional housing programs, a children's learning center, computer center, and a drop-in center in Berkeley. Volunteers will help prepare and install raised beds for an organic herb and vegetable garden. We need some volunteers with basic carpentry skills to help construct planting beds. On Mitzvah Day volunteers are needed to get the clothes shop ready by steaming, ironing, mending and tagging clothes. We will also be putting together toiletry bags for the clients. | What: | Cookies for Kids’ Cancer was founded by a very determined mother to help increase her young son’s odds in his fight against cancer. Her goal is to raise money to support pediatric cancer research. Pediatric cancer is the number one disease killer in the U.S. of children under the age of 18 and yet, it receives a very small percentage of the National Cancer Institute’s $4.8 billion annual budget and almost no research and development dollars from pharmaceutical companies. Every dollar counts and every dollar makes a difference. Research funding has made a direct and measurable impact on the survival rates of pediatric cancer. As the mother whose idea it was to create Cookies for Kids’ Cancer says, “If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes the world to fight pediatric cancer." Volunteers are needed to set up and sell baked goods. Baked goods are also needed to sell. Following three years touring the East Bay as a traveling museum, Habitot Children’s Museum opened a 7,000 sq. ft. facility in downtown Berkeley in 1998. Since opening, more than 850,000 people have visited, interacting with hands-on discovery exhibits and/or participating in children’s or adult classes or programs. With subsidized admission fees for everyone, families from all walks of life make up Habitot’s socio-economically and racially-diverse audience which ranges from 60,000 upwards annually. Twice a year Habitot welcomes 10-12 person crews for a day of deep cleaning, painting and light repairs on exhibit spaces. | What: | Save The Bay is the largest regional organization working to protect, restore and celebrate San Francisco Bay. As its leading champion since 1961, Save The Bay protects the Bay from pollution and inappropriate shoreline development, making it cleaner and healthier for people and wildlife. We'll work in Eden Landing Ecological Reserve, Hayward, to help restore this former salt pond. Our efforts will increase habitat for threatened and endangered waterfowl, shorebirds and fish, and provide recreation opportunities for residents who have been walled off from the shoreline for decades. What to bring and wear: Expect to get dirty! Be prepared to be outdoors for the duration of the project. Dress in layers, bring a hat and rain jacket (if necessary), and wear close-toed shoes to protect your feet. Long pants are recommended, but not required. Please also bring your own water bottle and help us cut down on plastic. Take precautions in wet weather with valuable items like binoculars and cameras. | What: | BOOKS for the BARRIOS began in 1981 among U.S. Navy families who were stationed in the Philippines. From 1981 to 1986, they worked closely with other knowledgeable, motivated volunteers as well as the U.S. Navy and Philippines Airlines to distribute hundreds of thousands of books throughout the Philippines. American children play a pivotal role in building and driving the organization's vision and operations. Growth of the organization into a worldwide project has been through the emphasis of the contribution and critical role of all participants, whether staff or volunteers. This project has a global citizenship and learning focus. We will be empowered to reach out to 18 million disadvantaged children in the remote islands of the Philippines. We will view slides of the project, pack boxes on pallets, learn how to shrink-wrap, and taste a Filipino treat. The students must bring with them three bags full of books, textbooks (math, science, english), toys, board games, puzzles, national geographic magazine, summer party dresses, tennis balls, baseball gloves, sports gear, arts and crafts supplies, educational supplies. New or used accepted. All donations must be in good condition with all parts. There is also a donation of $5.00 per person attending the project. NOTE: Please dress appropriately for physical work! | What: | Students will help to create, design, and assemble the coloring books that will bring joy to many kids with cancer.
As a continuation of our Seventh Grade Fund project focusing on cancer, we will make coloring books for kids with cancer that will be delivered to two organizations: Camp Okizu, a foundation dedicated to providing peer support, respite, mentoring, and recreational programs to meet the needs of all members of families affected by childhood cancer; John Muir Health Foundation, dedicated to improving the health of the communities they serve with quality and compassion. |
How to help in advance: |
If you would like to create a coloring book page for this project, please do the following: - Use only black pen to make your picture. - Draw picture on 8 1/2 by 11 piece of paper - Be sure to leave at least a 1/4 inch around the edge blank so it will copy easily. - Drawings should be appropriate for children ages 2 and up. - Turn picture in to Dan Lange no later than Sunday April 25th |
