Yad B’Yad: Family Track

What is Yad b’Yad?

  • Yad b’Yad is Hebrew for “Hand in Hand.”  It is a new program at Temple Isaiah that offers Jewish learning for both children and parents during the Religious School year.

Who can participate in Yad b’Yad?

  • Any Kindergartner, 1st, or 2nd grader at Temple Isaiah (during the 2010-2011 school year) may opt to participate in Yad b’Yad with his/her parents as an alternative to our grade-level Religious School program.
  • Yad b’Yad is offered during 1st session only.

How does Yad b’Yad work?

  • Children in Yad b’Yad will attend Religious School on Sunday mornings during 1st session (9:00 - 10:40 a.m.) in a unique K-2 combined class and then tefillah from 10:40-11:10am.
  • Yad b’Yad parents will attend Religious School every other session, for a total of approximately 13 Family Sessions during the school year.  At least one parent in each family is required to attend each Family Session.  The Family Sessions will consist of three components: separate adult / child learning, combined family learning, and tefillah.
  • Parents will get to study with Temple Isaiah’s Rabbis and other outstanding educators during Family Sessions.
  • Yad b’Yad families will participate in K-2 Tefillah with the rest of the Temple Isaiah community.

What if I have children who are younger than Kindergarten or older than 2nd grade?

  • Childcare will be provided at no cost for pre-school aged siblings during all Family Sessions.
  • Older siblings in Grades 3-6 should attend regular Religious School classes during 1st session.  Students in Grades 8-12 may serve as TA’s for Yad b’Yad if they wish. Students in 7th Grade must attend our 7th Grade program, which is during 2nd session.

Why should we sign up for Yad b’Yad?

  • This is a great opportunity to spend time with other families at Temple Isaiah and develop a smaller community within the larger Religious School community.
  • You will have the opportunity to develop closer connections with other Isaiah parents and their children who are participating in the program.
  • You will have the chance to study with Temple Isaiah’s Rabbis on a more regular basis.
  • You will have an enhanced understanding of your child’s learning at Religious School, which will enable you to incorporate these topics at home as a family in a more meaningful way.

What is the curriculum for Yad b’Yad?

  • The curriculum for Yad b’Yad will be based on the curricula in Grades K-2 at Temple Isaiah.  It will consist of the foundational building blocks of Jewish learning – holidays, Hebrew, Torah stories, creating a Jewish home, learning about the synagogue, etc.
  • The program will be tailored to fit students of various ages / stages, as well as adults.

Will my child learn as much Hebrew as students in the grade-level Religious School program?
Will my child be ready for Temple Isaiah’s Hebrew program in 3rd grade if s/he participates in Yad b’Yad?

  • Yes!  Like all K-2nd grade students at Temple Isaiah, students in Yad b’Yad will learn the letters of the Aleph-Bet as well as other important Hebrew words, blessings, and phrases.
  • We will create lessons and learning activities that work well for a multi-age group.

How/when will my child spend time with his/her grade-level friends at Religious School (those who are not in Yad b’Yad)?

  • Tefillah (Sunday mornings)
  • Shabbat & family programming
  • Other Temple Isaiah events / programs: Camp Kefli, holidays, Family Retreat, got shabbat?, etc.

How much will it cost to participate in in Yad b’Yad)?

  • The Religious School fee ($320) is the same for all K-2nd graders, whether or not your child participates in Yad b’Yad.
  • There is an additional Family fee of $125 per family to help pay for the expense of the extra parent / family programming that is an integral part of Yad b’Yad.
